BOOLE & BABBAGE ADDS NEW BACKUP PRODUCT TO BECOME MARKET LEADER FOR ENTERPRISE STORAGE MANAGEMENT

 Finalizes Agreement to Distribute Stage3,
 Leading LAN-to-Mainframe Backup System
CONYERS, Ga., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Boole & Babbage (Nasdaq: BOOL) today announced that its Storage Automation Division, EMPACT Software, has finalized an agreement to acquire worldwide distribution rights for Stage3 from Emprise Technologies of Bridgeville, PA. Stage3 was recently dubbed an "emerging market leader (in enterprise backup and storage management)" by the Gartner Group.
Stage3 provides a cooperative solution for centralized backup, taking advantage of sophisticated, mature LAN backup software currently on the market and re-directing the output via LU 6.2 to the MVS host. According to Glen McDermed of the Gartner Group, "Stage3 provides practical, cost-effective backup capabilities that offer a politically balanced solution to the power struggles over mission-critical data in the enterprise. LAN administrators can retain local control using familiar products while organizations can leverage the reduced costs and storage management disciplines of the glass house environment."
LAN backup software supported includes: ARCserve from Cheyenne Software, Network Archivist from Palindrome, NetWorker from Legato Systems and Sytos Plus from Sytron. Data from the LAN servers is maintained on the MVS host in a VSAM file, which can then be managed by hierarchical storage management products. An architectural algorithm (patent pending) permits Stage3 to obtain effective backup rates up to four times faster than alternative solutions. In addition, the amount of data that is transferred is minimized because of the sophistication of the LAN backup products and compression techniques used by Stage3.
"The advantages to the data center of Stage3 versus a mainframe-centric backup product include: less central-administrator activity on a daily basis, no conversion from existing backup procedures and the option to combine local backup for local recovery with data center backup for disaster recovery," continued McDermed.
"Stage3 has the unique position of being the only non-disruptive solution that capitalizes on existing corporate investments in LAN backup products. EMPACT's reputation with the mainframe user will significantly increase the market penetration for Stage3. With this announcement, EMPACT Software has made a major entrance into the distributed storage management marketplace. Emprise and EMPACT represent an ideal match," added McDermed.
Founders of Emprise and several Boole & Babbage executives were the previous founders and management team behind Duquesne Systems. Boole & Babbage senior vice president, Tim Dreisbach, formerly vice president of worldwide sales at Duquesne, said, "The co-founders, including Glen Chatfield and Neal Pollon, have assembled a team at Emprise consisting of proven performers in their ability to identify, develop and deliver highly salable products offering innovative solutions to pragmatic customer needs. Stage3 fits well with our aggressive strategy for the client/server markets. We are looking forward to a beneficial long-term development and distribution partnership between EMPACT Software and Emprise."
