Bookworks. Sue Doggett. New York: Watson-Guptill Publications (800-451-1741), 1998. Illus., hardcover, 144 pp., $27.95.

This lively appearing book serves as an introduction to the art and craft of bookmaking. Emphasis is on the design and construction of a book that could be a journal, memory or photo album, diary or an artwork in itself ... in the art form of the bookarts. Following a brief history of bookmaking beginning in the fourteenth century B.C., the book is divided into two sections. The first section describes the basic tools and materials that may be needed for different forms of book construction, and introduces a variety of basic techniques ranging from accordion folds to complex stitching methods. This section suggests the wide variety of papers that can be utilized, as well as how to make your own decorative papers. Folding options, adhesives, sewing techniques, attaching covers, boards and endpapers are just some of the processes addressed. The second section presents ten specific projects utilizing the skills and techniques developed earlier. Each product includes a list of the necessary materials and supplies and leads the neophyte bookmaker through the production stages with clear directions complemented by simple color sketches. Photographs of exemplary finished projects are so helpful. Recommended as a valid and creative craft experience for middle grade through adult levels.
