BONE MARROW REGISTRY DRIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM FROM NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY RECEIVES 1993 NATIONAL SATURN OUTSTANDING TEAMWORK AWARD

SPRING HILL, Tenn., July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Saturn Corporation announced today the recipient of the 1993 National Saturn Outstanding Teamwork Award: The Bone Marrow Registry Drive Leadership Team from Northwestern University.
The nine-member team received a $5,000 award and a trophy honoring their achievement from Saturn President Richard "Skip" LeFauve and John Michaud, UAW advisor for sales, service, marketing and finance, during a presentation ceremony held at Saturn's Training and Development center.
The winning team is donating its $5,000 award to the Leukemia Research Foundation based in Northbrook, Ill.
Named for a Northwestern University sophomore and drive founder who died from leukemia, the Jonathan Michael Schatz Memorial Bone Marrow Registry Drive added 543 new registrants to the National Donor Registry. Currently, 70 percent of leukemia patients who need a life-saving bone marrow transplant are unable to find a compatible donor. The registry drive was established to help address this need.
The project was designed to: increase the number of National Marrow Donor Program registrants from the university and the surrounding community with particular emphasis on minority recruitment, heighten awareness and associated need of the blood disease patients, communicate the simplicity and low risk of the marrow transplant process, and facilitate a support network for local patients.
Working closely with the Leukemia Research Foundation, the 1993 team committed itself to broadening the scope of the program and involving a wide array of student organizations. Its efforts produced a fresh strategy in its communication materials, permitting Evanston (Ill.) resident and artist Dale Beda to share his personal need for a life- saving donor match.
The members of the winning team are: Lindea Dew, Diane Hawley, Peter Henderson, Jay Rosen, Shannon Ryan, John Stellato, Don Stockton, Marianne Tschoe and Gene Weisskopf.
The awards program salutes outstanding accomplishments by student teams in their quest to make a positive contribution to the campus or its surrounding community. The program involves 16 colleges and universities across the country and is designed to create greater awareness of Saturn's values, philosophy and products through involvement in campus volunteer activities.
"Through this unique program, we honor the outstanding achievements of the students and, at the same time, transfer some of our fundamental philosophies, like teamwork, to them," LeFauve said.
Sixteen teams were selected by campus-based committees as Saturn Award winners at the local level, each team receiving $1,000, a trophy and the opportunity to compete for the national honor. A commission made up of Saturn team members and a university official selected the Northwestern team as the national winner.
