BOMBARDIER INC. TO SELL SKI-DOO SNOWMOBILES IN RUSSIA; HOCKEY LEGEND TO RUN NEW MOSCOW OFFICE

MONTREAL, Quebec, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- If there's one country in the world where people need snowmobiles to make it through the winter it's Russia. That country's new free market economy has spurred the company that invented the modern snowmobile to try and meet this demand.
Bombardier Inc., manufacturer of Ski-Doo snowmobiles, announced today that it has opened a warehouse and office in Moscow where it will provide information on Ski-Doo snowmobiles and sell directly to individuals and organizations. The company also announced that its official spokesman in charge of customer relations for the Moscow office is Vladislav Tretiak, a living legend throughout the former Soviet Union and virtually wherever the sport of hockey is played. One of the sport's greatest goaltenders, Tretiak led the former U.S.S.R Olympic team to three Olympic Gold medals and to 10 world hockey titles.
Jacques Woods, vice president of business development for the Motorized Consumer Products Group of Bombardier Inc., said that while the Moscow office is small, it will, under Tretiak's direction, open the door to big opportunities for the Montreal-based recreational product and transportation company.
In Russia, snowmobiling is as much a way of life and a mode of transportation as it is a form of winter recreation,'' said Woods. ''Demand always has exceeded the supply of snowmobiles and we are out to change that and introduce Russians to modern snowmobile technology.''
There are 110 million people living in snow covered areas in Russia versus 40 million in North America. Only 15,000 snowmobiles are sold annually in Russia compared to 150,000 units in North America, according to Woods. Moreover, the transportation networks, especially in the northern regions of the country, are very poor. This further increases the need for snowmobiles and opportunity for Bombardier.
As the world knows, Russia is experiencing enormous change, yet the dynamics of doing business there are evolving fairly slowly,'' said Woods.
However, we are looking at this venture as a long-term growth opportunity. We're extremely excited about the potential, and we're fortunate to have on our team someone with the winning spirit and credibility of Vladislav Tretiak.''
Several of the 1993 Ski-Doo models are on display near the new Moscow office. Almost all the 1994 Ski-Doo snowmobiles, which will be introduced this spring, will be available in Russia by fall.
