BOMBARDIER, NORTHROP ANNOUNCE PLANS TO TEAM FOR L.A. RAIL PROJECT
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Bombardier Inc. of Montreal, the leading producer in North America of rail transit equipment, and Northrop Corp. (NYSE: NOC) today announced they intend to team to present a proposal for the new Los Angeles Standard Car rail project.
Under the contemplated agreement, expected to be formalized this month, Bombardier would serve as team leader, with Northrop as subcontractor initially responsible for the research and development activities associated with the Standard Car program.
Bombardier, a multinational transportation designer and producer, has delivered more than 2,500 rail transit vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico alone, and over the past three years has captured about one third of the North American rail transportation market. The company is already providing 94 bi-level rail cars for Los Angeles' Metrolink commuter system. The Los Angeles Standard Car rail project calls for a base order of 72 high-performance light rail vehicles (LRVs) and two prototypes to be used as test beds for technologically advanced vehicle subsystems.
Northrop brings to the transit rail program its extensive experience in metal and composite aircraft structural design and its advanced electronics and sensor technology.
Northrop said the planned teaming agreement with Bombardier is part of its strategy not to enter new business areas on its own but to expand the use of its proven defense technology through association with companies which already enjoy world leadership positions in those businesses.
No further details of the Northrop-Bombardier agreement were announced.
