BOISE CASCADE ANNOUNCES SMOKE-FREE INITIATIVE

BOISE, Idaho, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Boise Cascade Corp. (NYSE: BCC) announced today the Smoke-Free Initiative, a companywide program that when fully implemented will prohibit smoking on all Boise Cascade property in the United States and Canada.
While the jury may still be out on other sources of health risks, the case against smoking and secondhand smoke is well-established. According to John B. Fery, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, "Given what we know about the serious health effects of smoking, we concluded that banning smoking on our property is the only responsible course of action and is consistent with our commitment to protecting the health and well-being of our employees."
The Smoke-Free Initiative will become effective on April 1, 1994, at the company's corporate headquarters building in Boise. Other Boise Cascade locations are expected to implement the initiative as soon as realistically practical. Management at each location will have the flexibility within a reasonable time frame to institute the Smoke-Free Initiative in a manner that works best for them. After implementation, enforcement of the initiative will be handled like other company rules.
As part of the implementation process, Boise Cascade will offer assistance to employees who want to break the smoking habit. Smoking cessation programs will continue to be made available at Boise Cascade locations for employees and their spouses and will be paid for by the company. Also, the company will help employees pay for FDA-approved nicotine patches and chewing gum used in conjunction with the smoking cessation programs.
