BOEING WICHITA MODIFIES 747 FOR CATHAY PACIFIC
WICHITA, Kan., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing Commercial Airplane

Group, Wichita Division, today "redelivered" to Cathay Pacific a 747-200 modified for service as a special freighter, Boeing said. This marks the Wichita Division's fourth completion of a modified 747 this year.
The modifications included removing the passenger provisions, increasing the height of the interior ceiling (to accommodate 10-foot- high containers) and replacing floor panels, floor beams and seat tracks to strengthen the main deck floor. Boeing Wichita also installed a side cargo door and an automated, powered, 29-position cargo handling system. In addition, the company was able to increase the payload capability by 53,500 pounds over that of the passenger configuration.
The modified 747-200, powered by Rolls-Royce engines, has a maximum takeoff weight of 833,000 pounds. It will join Cathay Pacific's fleet of three 747-200F production freighters.
Cathay Pacific has 25 additional 747s in its fleet, including 11 747-400s, six 747-300s and eight 747-200Bs. The airline has flown 747s since 1979.
The special freighter program, launched in 1990 to meet the growing cargo market demands, provides a second return on aircraft investments for cargo operators.
Boeing Wichita has extensive experience modifying commercial and military aircraft and is the principal modification center for The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA).
In the 1970s, Boeing Wichita conducted a similar freighter modification program on 747-100 aircraft in which 24 special freighter conversions were completed. It also has accomplished 747 stretched upper deck modifications and converted 19 model 747s from passenger to convertible passenger/cargo aircraft for the Civil Reserve Air Fleet program, which concluded in 1990.
Boeing has modified more than 50 model 747s to the freighter configuration, 20 of them within the past five years.
Currently, Boeing Wichita has three 747 aircraft modifications in process.
