BOEING UPDATES 1993 EMPLOYMENT REDUCTIONS

SEATTLE, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) announced today it has revised its 1993 employment forecast. The new forecast anticipates the companywide reduction will total 18,000 in 1993, rather than the 23,000 forecast earlier this year.
In the Puget Sound area, Boeing now forecasts a 1993 reduction of 11,000, rather than the 15,000 anticipated earlier. In Wichita, Boeing now forecasts a reduction of 5,000, compared with the 6,000 announced earlier. The forecast of reduction of 2,000 jobs in locations other than Puget Sound and Wichita has not changed.
The company said that the remainder of the work force reduction it forecast for 1993 will occur instead in the first half of 1994. "Our work force requirements are matched with our work requirements and we are constantly making adjustments to make that match," said Larry McKean, Corporate vice president - Human Resources. "Some of that adjustment will now take place in 1994, instead of 1993."
Job reductions driven by lower production levels will continue into 1994. Boeing will issue its 1994 employment forecast in the first quarter of next year, after it completes its current business planning cycle.
