BOEING INAUGURATES NEW PIERCE COUNTY MANUFACTURING PLANT
SEATTLE, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- During an inaugural ceremony at Boeing's newest manufacturing plant, company executives and local officials outlined the challenges that had to be met to go from ground breaking to an operational factory in just 14 months, Boeing said today.
The facility, which covers 950,000 square feet (88,255 square meters), was described as a symbol of cooperative spirit among The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), its Pierce County neighbors, public officials and leaders in the business community. Dick Abling, manager of Skin and Spar operations for the Fabrication Division of Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, praised their efforts and paid compliments to the facility.
"This beautiful, state-of-the-art facility is really a tribute to cooperation, teamwork and community involvement," Abling said.
Officially named Skin and Spar South, the manufacturing plant will make wing skins and wing stringers for the 777 and other airplanes in the Boeing family of jets.
Skin and Spar South is the first major facility to begin operations at the Frederickson Site, which is about 16 miles (25 km) southeast of downtown Tacoma.
Abling called the construction of this plant a "fast track" operation. The first concrete for the facility was poured in March 1991, and the first steel erected in June of 1991. An electrical substation was installed in November of that year. Then on April 15, 1992, mill operators, tool makers, production engineers, quality- assurance inspectors and other support personnel started working to produce aircraft parts.
The inaugural event was delayed until today to allow for most of the final construction work to be completed.
The next factory to come on line at Frederickson will be the Composites Manufacturing Center, which will fabricate the empennage (the vertical fin and horizontal stabilizers) of the 777. That facility is planned to come on line in mid-1993.
