BOEING DELIVERS FIRST COMPUTER UPGRADES FOR NATO AWACS

SEATTLE, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing Defense & Space Group announced today it has delivered to NATO the first production-quality, upgraded computer system for the alliance's fleet of Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft.
Called the NATO E-3A AWACS Memory Upgrade program, Boeing has been working on the effort since July 1991, when it was awarded a $69.9-million contract for the development, purchase and installation of the improved computer system.
Under the program, the existing IBM CC2 computer will be upgraded into the improved IBM CC2E model. The new system uses advanced technologies, such as bubble memory, to increase the system's memory by 380 percent beyond what is currently available. In addition, the new system eliminates the need for some CC2-model computer hardware, which brings weight savings, reduces the amount of electrical power needed to support the system, and offers added computing capabilities.
Boeing already has installed the system into one NATO AWACS aircraft as part of the development phase. The remaining 16 aircraft in the NATO fleet, and two mission simulators, will be retrofitted with production hardware during 1993.
A team of employees from Seattle-based Boeing and IBM Federal Systems Division in Oswego, N.Y., is on site at NATO's Main Operating Base in Geilenkirchen, Germany, to manage and complete the retrofit program.
