BOEING CHOOSES PRIME AFFILIATES FOR DARPA STARS PROGRAM

SEATTLE, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing Defense & Space Group has formed a prime contractor affiliate program for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Software Technology for Adaptable Reliable Systems (STARS) contract, the company said today.
The STARS contract is intended to improve the quality and reduce the cost of software in Department of Defense computer systems. Air Force Systems Command Electronic Systems Command (ESC) at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., is the program customer.
This affiliate program will focus on three main tasks: to direct the evaluation of STARS-developed technology, shift products incorporating the technology to commercial uses, and import the best commercial technology available to STARS.
Boeing, which is a leader in developing and deploying system and software engineering environments based on object-oriented repositories, has chosen Digital Equipment Corp. (NYSE: DEC) (which is involved in STARS' commercial applications), Atherton Technology, Computer Resources International A/S, Loral Aerospace's Software Productivity Laboratory and Verdix Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: VRDX) as prime affiliates.
The affiliates were chosen for their experience in developing and deploying a wide range of open systems-based software engineering environments with object-oriented repositories, according to Bill Hodges, STARS program manager.
In addition to its near-term deployment goals, Hodges said that the group intends to be a prime mover in establishing standards for object- oriented computer-aided software engineering technologies.
