BOEING AWARDS MAJOR AWACS CONTRACT TO DEUTSCHE AEROSPACE

SEATTLE, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing Defense & Space Group announced it has awarded a contract to Deutsche Aerospace AG (Dasa) to assist the Group's effort to upgrade NATO's 18 E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft.
The contract is valued at more than $39.5 million (more than 81 million DM).
Under terms of the agreement, Dasa will handle the installation and checkout of several enhancements aimed at modernizing NATO's E-3 fleet.
The work is being done under the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Modernization Programme, for which Boeing is the prime contractor. It includes incorporating in NATO's E-3s a new electronic support measures (ESM) system, which is a passive detection system that provides surveillance augmentation, target azimuth determination, target identification and assessment, and threat warning capabilities. Using the ESM system, mission operators can determine radar and weapon system type.
Other upgrades, added under the modernization program's Mod Block 1 phase, are color displays, which will improve the form and usability of incoming situational information, and Have Quick radios, which will enhance UHF communications by adding antijam features. A version of the Joint Tactical Information and Distribution System (JTIDS), called Link 16, also will be added and will increase the amount of information that can be collected and distributed among other AWACS airplanes, allied aircraft and ground stations.
The work will be done by Dasa's Military Aircraft Division at facilities in Manching, Germany. The effort will begin in January 1995 and run through February 1998.
