BOEING 777 FLIGHT DECK: A BETTER 'IDEA'
SEATTLE, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Although first flight is one year away, the Boeing 777 already is flying high in the industrial design world, according to Boeing Commercial Airplane Group. For the second year in a row, the Industrial Designers Society of America has honored the newest Boeing jetliner. This year, the 777's flight deck received an Industrial Design Excellence Award, or IDEA 93. In 1992, the airplane's passenger cabin was awarded the same honor -- the first time any airplane was recognized by the society. "Our foremost goal was to design a flight deck preferred by pilots and airlines from around the world," said Grace Chan, leader of the industrial design team for the 777. "We accomplished that by integrating all of the flight deck interior components and equipment to create an environment that is user friendly, functional and aesthetically pleasing. "It's very gratifying that the 777 flight deck is meeting its customers' expectations as well as the high standards of the industrial design community." The 777 flight deck received one of 26 Silver IDEA 93 awards, while 31 Golds and 34 Bronzes were selected from the 675 entries. The design jury applied six criteria to the competition, including design excellence, looking beyond aesthetics for innovation, user benefits, client benefits, good materials selection and positive social impact. In addition to Chan, the award honors Boeing 777 industrial designers Miguel Remedios, formerly of consultant Daedalus and now with Teague Associates, and Chris Lagerberg, and the entire 777 Flight Deck Engineering team, led by Jim Veitengruber, chief engineer. Chan also noted the contributions of airline pilots and engineers, who provided "invaluable support" in the form of suggested features and feedback. Since January 1991, more than 400 pilots have provided direction on the flight deck design and capability during visits to the 777 engineering simulator. The 777's "market driven" approach has resulted in a total of 123 airplanes on order from 12 customers. The airplane's nose section, which houses the flight deck, is now being completed at Boeing's Wichita (Kansas) Division, arriving next month to begin final assembly at the company's Everett, Wash., site.
