BOEING: EIGHT U.S. CORPORATIONS WIN CONFERENCE BOARD'S ANNUAL 'BEST IN CLASS' AWARDS

SEATTLE, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CHV), The Dow Chemical Co. (NYSE: DOW), Matsushita Electric Corp. of America (NYSE: MC), Merck & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MRK) and The Partnership for Kentucky School Reform (statewide coalition comprising Ashland Oil Inc. (NYSE: ASH), Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and United Parcel Service) will receive The Conference Board's "Best in Class" Education Awards at its Ninth Annual Business/Education Conference March 9 at The Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City, Boeing said today. The awards, presented for the third consecutive year, honor the nation's most innovative corporate programs in generating education improvement and school reform across America.
This the second "Best in Class" award for both Boeing and Chevron, which were previously honored by the board for education programs in 1991. Thirty-nine corporations have received the award to date.
"Business' commitment to education reform is growing deeper each year," said Dr. Leonard Lund, program director of the board's Business/Education Conference. "Top executives of major corporations, concerned about the nation's need for a better educated work force, are increasing their hands-on involvement in education improvement programs."
 The Boeing Co.
The Boeing Co. won the "Best in Class" award for its School District Strategic Planning project. Boeing launched this project in 1990 in its home state of Washington with the participation of the Washington State School Directors Association. Now, three years later, strategic planning projects are under way in 26 Washington school districts and six in Pennsylvania. This project uses a business planning model that has been recast to fit an education establishment. Because the project requires broad community participation, Boeing has identified these goals for the project: that it result in team-building model for local communities to help change the governance of public schools and that the strategic planning process act as a change mechanism to restructure public education.
