BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NORTH CAROLINA PRESIDENT THOMAS A. ROSE RECEIVES THE N.C. HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION 1993 MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD

RALEIGH, N.C., July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Thomas A. Rose, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, has received the 1993 Meritorious Service Award from the North Carolina Hospital Association (NCHA).
Rose received the award, which recognizes outstanding service to the healthcare field, July 15 at the NCHA Summer Meeting.
"Mr. Rose's contributions to healthcare in North Carolina have been invaluable," said C. Edward McCauley, NCHA president. "His leadership at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina has spanned 20 years -- one-third of the company's 60-year existence. We are grateful for his tireless work and proud to honor him with the Meritorious Service Award."
At the end of the year Rose will retire, leaving Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina one of the most prominent and financially strong Plans in the nation. Throughout his tenure Rose has won praise for his tough-minded approach to administrative expenses and for bringing financial controls and technology to the organization.
Before joining Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Rose served as vice president of hospital and provider affairs, director of hospital relations, and director of hospital and provider relations at Blue Cross of Northeast Ohio. He also served as assistant director of ambulatory services for Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and assistant executive secretary to the Cleveland Hospital Council.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Rose began his healthcare career as a teen-age hospital orderly. He received a bachelor's degree from Adelbert College of Case Western Reserve University and a master's degree in hospital administration from the University of Minnesota. Rose also completed an administrative residency at Baylor University Medical Center and attended the National Management Development Institute at Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
Rose served for three years as chairman of the board of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, the national organization representing the nation's Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans. His other healthcare related memberships include the Joint Conference Committee on Medical Care in North Carolina; the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust Advisory Board; the State Health Coordinating Council; and the City of Medicine Executive Committee.
The North Carolina Hospital Association is the professional trade organization representing 147 of the state's hospitals.
