BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF MICHIGAN SAVES $1.7 MILLION IN MAIL SERVICES FOR 1991

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF MICHIGAN SAVES $1.7 MILLION
 IN MAIL SERVICES FOR 1991
DETROIT, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) saved $1.7 million in postage last year by automating its mail processing to qualify for substantial discounts from the U.S. Postal Service, according to Daniel Hackett, BCBSM manager of Mail Services.
BCBSM, which sends out about 65 million pieces of mail annually, pre-sorted its mail and contracted with a private mailer to bar-code its mail in December 1991 to save money. The company received further savings when it updated its equipment by adding an automated inserting machine to fold, trim, stuff, seal and meter computer-generated letters.
"We saw a real opportunity to save a great deal of money last year when the U.S. Postal Service launched a drive to automate mail processing by 1995 by offering huge discounts to customers whose mail was pre-sorted and bar-coded," explained Hackett.
"This year, we hope to save more money by increasing our zip-plus- four pre-sorting and bar-coding operations which will allow us to qualify for further postal discounts of up to 20 percent," Hackett said.
