BLUE CROSS & BLUE SHIELD OF OHIO SELECTED BY CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND FOR HOSPITALIZATION COVERAGE

CLEVELAND, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Ohio (BCBSO) has been selected by the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland as the insurer for its hospitalization coverage effective April 1, 1993, and will use BCBSO's Super Blue Hospital Network. The contract with BCBSO will act to minimize premium increases over the next two years.
"Our partnership with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Ohio is expected to hold down healthcare costs for the diocese," said Joseph Smith, treasurer, Financial and Legal office, Diocese of Cleveland.
"We're extremely proud to be partners with the Diocese of Cleveland in our effort to control healthcare costs and provide significant cost savings," said John Burry, Jr., BCBSO chairman and chief executive officer.
BCBSO was selected by the Diocese after an 18 month review of multiple health insurance sources to maximize savings and contain healthcare costs. BCBSO will administer the hospital portion of the Diocese's healthcare program: claims for physician services will continue to be processed by the Diocese.
BCBSO will provide coverage for more than 10,000 persons whose hospitalization is covered by the Diocese.
Employees enrolled in health maintenance organizations (HMOs) or Medicare will not be affected.
The eight counties of the Diocese are: Ashland, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit, and Wayne.
Beginning April 1, BCBSO will administer all Diocese claims for employees enrolled in Emerald Health Network (EHN), Ohio Health Choice (OHCP) and the Deductible Plan. Claim for non-hospital services (physician services) will continue to be processed by the Diocesan Health Benefits Office.
Between April 1 and June 30, diocesan employees enrolled in EHN and OHCP will continue to receive 100 percent coverage for most hospital services when they use hospitals currently in their network. They also will receive 100 percent in-network coverage when they use Super Blue Hospitals that are not currently in EHN or OHCP.
Beginning July 1, however, in-network coverage will be available only when employees use Super Blue Hospitals, many of which are also part of EHN or OHCP.
Employees enrolled in the Deductible Plan will have the opportunity to receive higher levels of coverage for hospital services beginning April 1. When Diocese employees receive treatment from a Super Blue Hospital, many of their hospital expenses will be covered at 100 percent. If Deductible Plan employees use non-Super Blue Hospitals, their expenses will be covered according to their current plan provisions.
In addition to the 24 Super Blue Hospitals, the following hospitals will provide in-network benefits for Diocesan healthcare participants: St. John West Shore Hospital, St. Alexis Hospital, Timken Mercy Hospital, and Lake Health System, Inc., (East and West).
