BLOODSTOCK DESK: Million her oine Estr apade dies at 25.

ESTRAPADE, champion turf mare in 1986 and the only female to win the Grade 1 Arlington Million, died from an apparent heart attack at Hill `n' Dale Farm, Kentucky on Friday morning.

Michael Paulson, executor of her owner, the Allen E Paulson Living Trust, had recently taken the decision to pension off the 25-year-old daughter of Vaguely Noble to the nearby Old Friends retirement farm.

Michael Blowen, of Old Friends, said: ``We were really excited about having her. I had spent all day Thursday in the Keeneland library researching her and we had a real nice paddock plaque all ready for her.''

Bred by Nelson Bunker Hunt, Estrapade was second in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille as a three-year-old. A Group 3 winner in France at four, she also finished third in the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Invitational Handicap at Santa Anita.

At five, she won three Grade 1 contests, namely the Yellow Ribbon, the Santa Ana Handicap and the Gamely Handicap.

Allen Paulson then bought her for $4.5 million at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in 1985.

She continued in training as a six-year-old, winning the Arlington Million and the Grade 1 Oak Tree Invitational Handicap and being placed in three more Grade 1s, including the Breeders' Cup Turf. The mare retired the winner of 12 of her 30 races, with earnings of $1,937,142.

Out of the No Robbery mare Klepto, Estrapade was a half-sister to top-class Italian performer Isopach and multiple Grade 1 winner and 1990 Horse of the Year Criminal Type.

Her best progeny was Rice, by Blushing John, a Listed winner in America as a six-year-old and also placed in a Grade 2. Her daughter Troika is dam of Miss Mambo, who finished third in last season's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.
