BLOCKBUSTER SPONSORS EXTENDED McCARTNEY TOUR

HOUSTON, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Paul McCartney New World Tour today announced the conclusion of an exclusive U.S. sponsorship agreement with Blockbuster Entertainment Corporation (NYSE: BV), a leading entertainment company with its principal businesses in home video and music retailing.
And, as a result of the enormous success of the first four shows in America, Paul is to extend The New World Tour to visit an extra 12 cities in the U.S.
Blockbuster will appear as Title Sponsor on all future McCartney shows and will mount a massive in-store promotion campaign for The New World Tour through posters, video monitors and ticket contests supported by TV, radio and print advertising in the 34 cities that the tour plans to visit between now and July 31.
Among the proposed additional cities are: Boston, Washington, Nashville, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, the Blockbuster Pavilion in Charlotte (N.C.) and Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami.
Sponsorship of the tour is a natural relationship for both parties, according to Steven R. Berrard, Blockbuster vice chairman, president and chief operating officer. "Paul McCartney," he said, "has been a driving force in the music industry, a living legend whose influence and popularity spans more than three decades of popular music. We believe it's only appropriate that Blockbuster, a leader in the entertainment industry, should be so closely associated with this tour, and we're pleased that Paul agrees."
Richard Ogden, managing director of Paul McCartney's MPL Communications Ltd. said: "All of us on The New World Tour are delighted that the tour has been such an immediate success and we're pleased that this massive show will now be seen in even more cities. We are also delighted to be associated with Blockbuster Entertainment. Since Paul started touring again in 1989, we have sought a sponsor who is in the same business as we. We're pleased that Blockbuster fits that bill."
The Blockbuster system includes 3,170 video stores as of March 31, 1993, of which 1,141 were franchise-owned and 2,029 were company-owned (including 775 stores operated under the Ritz name in the United Kingdom). The Blockbuster video system currently operates in 48 states in the United States as well as in nine foreign countries. The Blockbuster music division includes 237 Sound Warehouse and Music Plus stores operating in 40 metropolitan areas in the United States, and 15 Megastores operating throughout Continental Europe, Australia and the United States owned by a joint venture with the Virgin Retail Group.
Blockbuster is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.
