BLM TO ELIMINATE CLEARCUTTING AS MAIN HARVEST METHOD UNDER NEW INITIATIVE

BLM TO ELIMINATE CLEARCUTTING AS MAIN HARVEST METHOD
 UNDER NEW INITIATIVE
WASHINGTON, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Director Cy Jamison announced today a new forestry initiative, "Total Forest Management," that represents a major change in the agency's timber harvesting philosophy and practices.
Total Forest Management, or "TFM," provides a comprehensive ecosystem approach to timber harvesting. Under this initiative, the BLM, when planning timber sales, will emphasize not only timber volume, but also to a greater extent maintaining and enhancing water, soil and air quality, fish and wildlife habitat, old growth, aesthetics and recreation.
"TFM furthers the president's new initiative to protect and enhance the world's forest," said Jamison. "It's another example of this administration's commitment to protect the environment."
The BLM manages approximately 12 million acres of commercial timber land, mainly in Western Oregon and Alaska. One of the most dramatic changes in forestry practices on BLM timber sales under Total Forest Management will be the elimination of clearcutting as the primary harvesting method.
Currently 90 percent of BLM's timber sales are harvested by clearcutting. Under TFM, that figure will drop substantially.
Clearcutting will still be used on a limited basis when it is the most environmentally effective method to achieve specific management objectives, such as preventing insect and disease infestations and rehabilitating lands adversely impacted by fires, windstorms, and other natural disasters.
"Under TFM, clearcutting will no longer be our first choice forest management tool, it will be our last," said Jamison.
The Total Forest Management philosophy will be reflected in the BLM's new 10-year Resource Management Plans for Oregon that will be released for public comment in August.
