 BIS STRATEGIC DECISIONS PRESENTS THE 1992 PRINTER INDUSTRY
 AWARDS; MULTIFUNCTION PRODUCTS SWEEP ALL SEGMENTS
 SAN JOSE, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- BIS Strategic Decisions today presented the 1992 awards for excellence to Cannon, Compaq, Hewlett- Packard, NEC, Okidata, and Xerox for their contributions to advancing the state of the art in computer printing. This year's winners reflect an important change occurring in the low-end, midrange, and high-end printers as the marketplace moves toward multifunctionality.
 The BIS award recognizes the printers or printer technology that has moved the industry forward from either a marketing or technological point of view.
 The awards were presented during BIS' Printer, Color & Consumables Conference Week held at the Red Lion Hotel in San Jose. Rob Auster, group director of Electronic Printer Services, and Peter Testan, vice president of the Color Hard Copy Service at BIS, presented the awards to:
 -- John Ring, director of desktop document processing, Okidata, for DOC-IT 1992 Printer of the Year;
 -- Jim Rosetta, national sales manager, Cannon USA, for the CJ10, Outstanding Color Multifunction Product of 1992;
 -- Lynn Schlemeyer, director of marketing, Compaq Computer Corporation, for the PAGEMARQ 15 and PAGEMARQ 20, Outstanding Midrange Printers of 1992;
 -- John McIntyre director of marketing, printers, NEC Technologies, Inc. for the Silentwriter Model 95, Outstanding low-end Printer of 1992;
 -- Anthony Frederico, program manager, Xerox Corporation, for the DocuTech Network publisher, Outstanding High-end Printer of 1992;
 -- Maurice Holmes, president of the Xerox Office Document Systems Division; Xerox Corporation, for the Xerox 4700, Outstanding Color Printer of 1992 -- High-End Category;
 -- Robert Granger, SPR Marketing Manager, Hewlett-Packard Company, for the Hewlett-Packard Deskjet/Writer 550 C, for Outstanding Color Printer of 1992 -- General Business/Office Category.
 When making the choice for this year's winners, BIS chose to recognize champions that are setting the standards for a new generation of products.
 "Although there have been many detailed improvements involving technology refinements and price/performance enhancements to printers during the last 12 months, the combination of printer functions with other office automation functions in a single device represents a change by 'kind not by degree,'" said Auster. "Multifunctionality takes the printer industry in new and exciting directions that benefit both vendors and users."
