BIOTECHNOLOGY TEST FOR PETROLEUM CONTAMINATION GIVES IMMEDIATE FIELD RESULTS

CINNAMINSON, N.J., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- DNA Plant Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: DNAP) today announced that its Quantix Systems unit has begun selling a new version of its Portable Workstation, providing rapid detection of environmental contamination from diesel fuel, kerosene, motor oil, home fuel oil and jet fuel. This is a product line expansion that is expected to lead to increased sales in the environmental diagnostics market.
Using biotechnology, the Quantix(TM) Portable Workstation can analyze five samples in a half an hour compared to the standard industry procedure of sending samples to off-site laboratories that generally takes two weeks.
"This new on-site analysis capability opens the door to a $50 million market, providing immediate information for environmental remediation projects," said Steve Ludmerer, president of Quantix Systems.
The Quantix Portable Workstation has already been purchased by a number of consulting and engineering firms, oil companies and state and federal regulatory agencies. It provides immediate information for soil testing at oil terminals, refineries, pipelines, airports, motorpools, vehicle maintenance facilities and oil tank storage sites.
The Quantix Portable Workstation product line was first introduced at the end of last year to measure gasoline contamination, containing BTEX -- Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene. The new version of the Portable Workstation now detects BTEX as well as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in diesel fuel, kerosene, motor oil, home fuel oil and jet fuel.
The system uses a type of biotechnology called immunoassay technology. Immunoassay uses antibodies which bind to specific targets, in this case petroleum contaminants. Immunoassay technology has also been used in human and animal health diagnostics.
The Quantix Portable Workstation is the most sensitive immunoassay in the environmental market. PAH can be quantified in soil starting at 700 parts per billion (PPB). Gasoline contamination can be detected at 3.5 parts per million in soil and at 250 PPB in water.
Quantix Systems, which recently changed its name from Agri- Diagnostic Associates, is the environmental diagnostics unit of DNAP and is based in Cinnaminson, N.J. DNAP is a leading agricultural biotechnology company, applying a spectrum of technologies to develop and commercialize plant-based products and environmental diagnostic products for consumer and industrial markets. The company has two major operating joint ventures -- FreshWorld in premium fruits and vegetables and InterMountain Canola Company in special varieties of edible canola oil.
