BIOSYS RECEIVES PATENT FOR COCKROACH TRAP; TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES SAFE EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO CHEMICAL PESTICIDES

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- biosys (NASDAQ-NMS: BIOS) announced today that it has received a U.S. patent for an environmentally safe trap that employs beneficial nematodes, microscopic worm-like organisms, for effective control of cockroaches.
A pioneer in the development and commercialization of biopesticides based on the nematode, biosys has several products which serve the agricultural and consumer lawn and garden markets in the United States and Europe. The cockroach trap represents the first time biosys has targeted product development for the household pest market and above-ground application of nematodes for insect control. Nematodes are subterranean organisms which require moisture for survival and are not found above the soil in nature.
The technology used in the biosys cockroach trap provides an innovative way to keep the nematodes hydrated and healthy, as well as providing an environment for the nematodes and the cockroach to come into contact with each other. Cockroaches enter the palm-size trap in search of moisture and the nematodes enter the pests, releasing a bacteria that kills the cockroach. Both the nematode and the bacteria it carries are harmless to humans, pets and other animals. The biosys trap represents a novel, safe and environmentally sound solution to the significant problem of cockroach infestation.
"This invention provides means to control cockroaches in homes, factories, food-handling establishments -- without any hazard to people, children or pets," said Dr. Venkat S. Sohoni, president and chief executive officer of biosys. "The characteristics of the trap are such that initially it will be best used by professional pest control operators who want to provide their customers with an effective safe means to control cockroaches."
The trap has been tested by several researchers in the United States and abroad, and efficacy has been demonstrated for several weeks. biosys expects to continue this testing in large scale and develop the commercial feasibility of a product. A major advantage of the nematode is that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has exempted the nematode and its bacteria from all registration requirements allowing commercialization without any regulatory hurdles.
biosys is a leader in the development and commercialization of biological pesticide products for the control of a wide range of insect pests. The company recently announced that a letter of intent had been signed to acquire AgriSense, a developer and marketer of pheromone-based insect traps and lures, as well as other biopesticide technologies and products. Using advanced science and technology, biosys develops and manufactures biological controls that are highly effective in large-scale commercial usage. The company holds patents for the manufacture of beneficial nematodes in liquid fermentation and their formulation for commercial use. biosys shares are traded on NASDAQ-NMS with ticker symbol BIOS.
