BIOSYS AND CIBA-GEIGY REACH R&D FUNDING AND MARKETING AGREEMENT

BIOSYS AND CIBA-GEIGY REACH R&D FUNDING AND MARKETING AGREEMENT
PALO ALTO, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- biosys (NASDAQ: BIOS), a manufacturer of biological insecticides, and CIBA-GEIGY LTD., of Basle, Switzerland, the world's leading Agrochemical company, today announced the signing of an R&D funding and international marketing agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, CIBA-GEIGY will provide biosys with $5 million over two years for research and development of beneficial nematode strains and formulations. CIBA-GEIGY will be responsible for the promotion and marketing of biosys' nematode-based products.
Benefical nematodes, microscopic organisms that kill a host of soil-dwelling insect pests, are the active components in biosys' range of biological insecticides. These products provide effective control of insect pests. They are also harmless to humans, plants and animals, and leave no harmful residues in the soil or groundwater. In the United States and in several European countries, they are exempt from all registration requirements.
The 15-year agreement grants CIBA-GEIGY exclusive rights to market and distribute biosys' present and future beneficial nematode- based products for insect control in the agricultural and horticultural crop markets in all countries except the United States. The U.S. market for professional Turf and Ornamentals is covered by a separate agreement made in March 1991 between biosys and the U.S. subsidiary of CIBA-GEIGY Limited. This new agreement excludes sale of biosys' products in the professional turf insect control segment in Japan.
"This agreement with biosys attests to our strong commitment to commercialize effective biological pesticides which are harmless to the environment," said Dr. Heimo Brunetti, corporate director and head of the Plant Protection Division in CIBA-GEIGY, Limited. "The efficacy of biosys' products against a wide spectrum of insect pests has been confirmed over the last three years through our joint field development trials conducted in several countries. In 1991, CIBA-GEIGY Corporation became the exclusive distributor of biosys' products in the U.S. for the Turf and Ornamental market and successfully launched CIBA-GEIGY's first biological insecticide product, Exhibit(R), which was developed and manufactured by biosys. We look forward to promoting and marketing biosys' products in Western Europe in the coming season."
"The company believes that CIBA-GEIGY's endorsement of our technology and its marketing commitment with the signing of this agreement will expand the penetration by biosys' products in the major insecticide markets of the world," said Dr. Venkat Sohoni, president and CEO of biosys. "We will collaborate on a comprehensive series of field trials in several countries, including Japan, to develop further fields of application."
biosys' products are marketed in the United States and Europe under the brand names BioSafe(R) Lawn and Garden Insect Control, Sanoplant and Boden-Nutzlinge for use by the homeowner; BioVector(R) and BioSafe-N(R), biological insecticides for a broad range of agricultural applications, and Exhibit(R) Biological Larvicide for control of turf and ornamental insect pests which is marketd by CIBA-GEIGY Corporation, U.S. BioSafe products became available through retail distribution this year in the United States by the Ortho Consumer Products Division, Chevron Chemical Company, as part of the Orthoganics(R) product line.
