BIOPOL(TM) PLASTICS APPLICATION LAUNCHED

 BIOPOL(TM) PLASTICS APPLICATION LAUNCHED
WILMINGTON, Del., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- ICI Bio Products & Fine

Chemicals US today announced the first commercial application in North America for BIOPOL plastics.
These naturally derived, biodegradable plastics are produced by Imperial Chemical Industries (NYSE: ICI) through the fermentation of sugar by bacteria. BIOPOL plastics will be used in blow-molded bottles and injection-molded closures supplied by Berlin Packaging Corp. for a new line of hair care products, called Evanesce, marketed by Brocato International.
"This application is the first in a variety of injection-molded parts and blow-molded bottles that will be produced in North America with BIOPOL plastics over the next few years," said William Luzier, commercial manager, ICI Biopolymers.
The bottles are made from ICI's range of unique thermoplastic resins derived from renewable agricultural feedstocks. The polymers, known technically as poly(hydroxybutyrate-hydroxyvalerates), are durable, stable and moisture resistant in normal use. Yet, when disposed of in a microbially active environment (such as composting facilities), the materials can fully biodegrade. In aerobic conditions (with oxygen), the plastics break down into carbon dioxide, water and a small amount of biological material, in a process similar to the decomposition of vegetable matter. The materials also are completely biodegradable in anaerobic environments (without oxygen).
"ICI supports a balanced approach to solid waste management which includes a variety of initiatives such as reuse, recycling and composting," Luzier said. "BIOPOL plastics safely fit these and any disposal method currently in use," he said. "For these bottles, our customers and their customers can be assured that whichever disposal option they prefer or are required to use by local law, BIOPOL plastic bottles will fit that process."
ICI said it foresees demand for BIOPOL materials growing rapidly and has recently commissioned a new plant at Billingham, UK, which will initially produce at about 300 (metric) tonnes per year. The plant can be readily upgraded to produce substantially higher volumes and ICI projects production to reach about 5,000 tonnes per year by the mid- 1990s.
ICI Bio Products & Fine Chemicals US is part of ICI Specialties, one of seven international business groups of Imperial Chemical Industries PLC (ICI), based in London. ICI is one of the world's leading science- based companies with manufacturing operations in 40 countries and annual sales of approximately $23 billion. In North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, ICI employs about 26,000 people and has annual sales of about $6 billion.
