BIOMIRA APPOINTS DR. LOWELL T. HARMISON TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Biomira Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOMF) today announced the appointment of Lowell T. Harmison, Ph.D., to its board of directors. Dr. Harmison, a resident of Washington, D.C., brings the number of board members to eight.
"Dr. Harmison brings a distinguished scientific and public service background to Biomira," said Eric E. Baker, chairman of Biomira and president of Altamira Capital Corp. "His nearly two decades of senior management experience within the United States Public Health Service gives him a unique perspective on the workings of the American medical regulatory environment. That experience is invaluable to Biomira as it proceeds toward U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensing of its products," Baker concluded.
Harmison began his career in 1967 as division director at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. In April 1974, Harmison was appointed science advisor to the assistant secretary of health, United States Public Health Service. In this capacity he focused on developing policy and plans to direct the government's activities in the areas of recombinant DNA regulation, biotechnology transfer, and drug and vaccine research and development. During this period, Harmison directed the teams that translated the laboratory test for the HIV-AIDS virus antibody into an FDA-licensed and commercially available screening test for the worldwide blood supply.
In 1986, Harmison was appointed to the position of deputy assistant secretary for health of the U.S. Public Health Service, where he shared responsibilities for the operations and management of the National Institutes of Health, the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and several other health departments.
As a result of this distinguished governmental career, Harmison received the U.S. Presidential Meritorious Executive Rank Award in 1987.
Following his retirement from government, and during the period December 1987 to November 1990, Harmison served as chief operating officer of The Maxwell Foundation, an independent philanthropic and research organization. His current civic responsibilities include membership on the National Board of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation and the West Virginia University visiting committee. He also serves as a member of the Orphan Drug Board and the National Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines.
Harmison received bachelor's and master's degrees from West Virginia University and a doctorate from the University of Maryland. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan and is also a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management.
