BIOMEDICAL SENSORS BEGINS DISTRIBUTION OF PARATREND 7

NEW YORK, Sept. /PRNewswire/ -- Biomedical Sensors, a Pfizer company, has begun worldwide distribution of its intravascular blood gas monitoring system, the Paratrend 7, following more than a year of clinical trials and advanced demonstrations for customers in Europe and the U.S.
The Paratrend 7 intravascular sensor, incorporating electrochemical and fiber optic technology, has a diameter of less than 0.5mm and is the smallest blood gas sensor available. Its unique co-axial introducer allows rapid touch-free placement in the patient through a 20-gauge arterial catheter without significantly affecting the integrity of the blood pressure measurement. Results from trials show excellent correlation with laboratory analysis, and continuous sensor functionality up to 200 hours where extended patient monitoring was appropriate.
"Reaction of our test users, to both the functional performance and ease-of-use of our system has been extremely positive," said Roy Johnson, president of Biomedical Sensors.
"Based on our thorough research and extensive testing, we believe Paratrend 7 meets all our customers' information and usability needs and delivers more efficient health care in the important area of continuous blood-gas monitoring." The Paratrend 7 system is the first in a planned new series of innovative devices from Biomedical Sensors.
Management and treatment of critically ill patients depend on blood gas information to determine cardio-respiratory status. Currently, intermittent blood samples from patients are taken and then analyzed by a clinical laboratory instrument. Continuous monitoring reduces delays in delivering this vital information, allowing for proactive diagnosis and therapeutic measures. It also reduces the number of required blood samples, resulting in decreased blood contact for medical personnel.
The easy-to-use Paratrend 7 provides patient data on a large screen for up to 24 hours. A portable monitor unit allows patient transfer between departments with no loss of calibration or blood gas data, reconnecting on arrival to another Paratrend 7 monitor. In addition, the Paratrend 7 system can be connected to other hospital computers or database systems.
