BIOMAGNETIC TECHNOLOGIES, INC. RECEIVES KEY PATENT FOR WHOLE HEAD SYSTEM

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Biomagnetic Technologies, Inc. ("BTi"), (Nasdaq: BTIX) today announced that the Company will be issued a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office relating to certain design principles incorporated in the Company's whole head biomagnetometer. The newly patented invention covers a unique approach to sensor geometry which takes advantage of heat transfer methodologies already patented by the Company.

"This important patent allows for whole head coverage in the detection of magnetic signals from the human brain in both a seated and fully reclined position, and is a unique feature which will facilitate future use in clinical settings," said James V. Schumacher, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "This functionality will help our users expand the range of examination options and should have a positive impact on examination time.

Specifically, patent #5,471,985 protects the invention of having the head cavity and coil array tilted at such an angle to support a 90 degree range of a subject's head movement. This design is incorporated into BTi's whole head biomagnetometer, the Magnes(R) 2500 WH. The system is based on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDS), which permit ultrasensitive magnetic field detection in the human brain. The patent describes a novel design of the dewar vessel with a helmet-shaped recess at one end. The sensors are positioned within the interior of the dewar body around the periphery of the recess permitting the pivoting of the dewar vessel over a range of 90 degrees to the vertical, without a significant change in evaporation of the cryogenic fluid.

"This patent protects proprietary technologies that BTi has developed through its internal research and development programs," said Bruce S. Aboudara, vice president marketing and sales for BTi. "By continuing to build a portfolio of unique and value-adding technology, we help our users maintain leadership positions in their scientific and clinical programs," he added.

Headquartered in San Diego, BTi is the world leader in the development of Magnetic Source Imaging for research and clinical applications. The Company officially announced the new 148 channel whole head (Magnes(R) 2500 WH) MSI system in November 1994. The first shipments of the new system for research use are expected to commence in early 1996.
