BIOJECT BEGINS SALES OF NEW NEEDLE-FREE INJECTOR

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Bioject Medical Technologies (NASDAQ: BJCT) announced that training of its area field sales managers has been completed and that sales of the Biojector(R) 2000, its advanced needle-free injection management system, will commence today.
The Biojector 2000 delivers commonly injectible drugs intramuscularly or subcutaneously without using a needle to penetrate patient skin. Because no contaminated needles are produced by the injection process, the device eliminates the possibility of dangerous needlestick injuries.
Needlestick injuries can transmit bloodborne pathogens such as the HIV and hepatitis viruses and now threaten the health of more than 12 million U.S. healthcare workers daily. Almost one million needlesticks are reported each year and it is believed that 60 percent more go unreported.
To head the initial sales of the Biojector 2000, Bioject has established and trained a team of area field sales managers which is the foundation of its elite sales and distribution network. The area managers will start building sales in their regions and prepare the way for co-marketing partnership sales forces. High-volume users of needles such as hospitals, large medical clinics, buying groups and home healthcare agencies are initial targets for the sales effort.
Jim Buck, Bioject's area sales manager for the midwestern United States, based in Ohama, Neb., was most recently national accounts manager for San Diego, Calif.-based IMED Corp., a leading drug delivery product company. He has over 20 years experience in sales and management in the medical/surgical equipment field.
Alan Henderson, southeastern area sales manager, based in Boca Raton, Fla., has more than 12 years of experience in sales and sales management in the healthcare market. He has extensive experience in developing distributor networks in the hospital and alternate care markets. He was most recently eastern regional sales manager with Bio Logics Products Inc.
Bob Marsella assumes the position of regional sales manager for Southern California and adjoining areas. He has 12 years of medical sales experience, having worked in senior sales positions at U.S. Surgical, IMED and Genentech.
Gene Meyer, northwest area field sales manager, joins Bioject from his previous position as director of sales for Portland-based Instromedix. He has 15 years of medical device sales, management and international marketing experience. His experience in selling drug delivery systems includes positions with Baxter International, IMED and American Hospital Supply.
The appointment of Roger Jacobi as director of marketing, who joins Bioject from Laserscope, was made last week.
The direct sales effort is the first phase of Bioject's sales and marketing plan which will include implementation of strategic distribution and co-marketing programs with major pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. Bioject has already secured a Japan distribution arrangement with Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. It is also developing new products for the insulin market under a joint development agreement with Eli Lilly.
"Our team of area field sales managers is the infrastructure of Bioject's highly qualified, elite sales network that will effectively introduce this advanced technology to our target markets and grow our sales and distribution channels as our product gains acceptance," commented Richard Hollis, executive vice president of sales and marketing and chief operating officer. "Based on the benefits offered by the model 2000, its performance in the field, as well as user and patient preferences, we expect to make the Biojector the leading method of injecting drugs by the year 2000."
Bioject was founded in 1985 to develop needle-free injection systems and today is the acknowledged leader in jet injection technology.
