BINDLEY WESTERN INDUSTRIES ACQUIRES ASSETS OF PRN MEDICAL

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Bindley Western Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIND) announced today it has acquired the assets of PRN Medical, Inc., a wholesale distributor based in Orlando, Fla., specializing in the sale of renal care and dialysis supplies and equipment to accounts in the United States and South America.
The acquired company is being merged into the Charise Charles division of Bindley Western. PRN Medical President and founder Richard Johns has joined Bindley Western as vice president of the Charise Charles division. He will be responsible for renal care and dialysis sales and marketing and will report to Michael Visnich, president of the Charise Charles division.
Bindley Western Chairman and CEO William E. Bindley said management viewed the acquisition as an excellent opportunity to increase market share in the renal care segment of its alternate care business through an expanded line of higher gross margin products. "Especially attractive is the opportunity to participate in the sale of products and equipment to accounts outside of the United States." Currently, PRN Medical is selling approximately 25 percent of its products to accounts in South America. He concluded by saying that the company is continuing to evaluate new opportunities for growth outside of the traditional wholesale drug business, especially in the alternate care markets.
Indianapolis-based Bindley Western (NASDAQ: BIND), with sales in 1993 to exceed $3 billion, is one of the largest drug wholesalers in the United States. The firm distributes ethical pharmaceutical and related health and beauty products to customers in 36 states. Its alternate care division, Charise Charles, is headquartered in Altamont Springs, Fla., and supplies dialysis and oncology products to accounts in 44 states.
