BILLION-DOLLAR RENOVATION PROGRAM AT BEST WESTERN NEARS COMPLETION

PHOENIX, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- More than $1.3 billion has been invested to upgrade Best Western's 1,970 North American properties since 1988. Best Western, known for having one of the industry's strictest quality assurance and standards programs, initiated the design-evaluation program because customer expectations for quality hotel standards have changed.
"The Best Western that guests experience today is unquestionably a higher quality accommodation than what they have encountered in the past," stated Ronald A. Evans, Best Western's president and chief executive officer.
Throughout Best Western's North American system, major renovations have taken place in guest rooms and public spaces, and in many cases, the properties have received completely new exteriors.
During this first phase of the renovation program, a comprehensive design review of all North American properties was conducted and a checklist of required improvements was developed for each property. Best Western members were then given specific deadlines by which those requirements had to be met. As a result of this ambitious program, members invested an average of $683,000 each to enhance their properties.
The next phase, scheduled to begin this summer, encompasses a further evaluation and review of Best Western's complete North American inventory to ensure that the properties maintain the highest quality standards possible. All properties will receive on-site evaluations by professional designers who will assign a design score to each property.
"Though we are pleased with the progress we've made during the this initial phase to improve our quality standards, we are not finished," emphasized Evans. "We recognize that guests' expectations and tastes change."
According to Senior Vice President-Worldwide Marketing William S. Watson, "There is a new focus on addressing customer needs where their feedback will be the driving force for change in the future. We will continue our work to improve the product we offer to the traveling public."
More than 1,900 North American Best Western hotels, inns and resorts are located throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
