BIG STOP; EXCLUSIVE pets AND THEIR people Help end circus cruelty.

Byline: By JOSHUA LAYTON

THE People today renews its call for a ban on ALL circus animals.

Since we launched our crusade two years ago, the number of these tragic creatures made to performin Britain has fallen to fewer than 50.

But helpless beasts still forced to tour include a 54-year-old arthritic elephant, seven tigers, eight camels, five lions and several zebras.

Campaigners are incensed that the Government is still dithering over a ban while other nations like Bolivia in South America - a continent not renowned for its animal welfare - have enforced one.

Animal Defenders International boss Jan Creamer said: "An arthritic circus elephant spends its life chained by two legs, and bears, lions and tigers are kept in tiny cages on the backs of lorries.

"Opinion polls over the last decade have shown consistently that 80 per cent of the public support an end to the use of animals in travelling circuses.

The Bolivian government has listened to its people, regulations now need to be put in place in the UK."

LabourMPIan Cawsey, who has been appointed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to look at animal welfare, wants to apply the strict zoo licensing system to animal circuses - which would probably bring them to an end.

Mr Cawsey said: "It seems ridiculous that a lion in London Zoo has the protection of the law yet in a circuses it wouldn't matter at all."

Since we launched our crusade, readers have donated pounds 4,000 to Animal Defenders International. If YOU wish to donate, phone 020 7630 3340 or visit www.ad-international.org
