BIG SKY USA REPORTS THIRD-QUARTER REVENUES DOUBLE TO $1.49 MILLION ON STRENGTH OF BRANDS

TACOMA, Wash., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Big Sky USA Inc. (OTC Pink Sheets) today announced that revenues for its fiscal 1993 third quarter doubled to $1,490,000 from $745,000 in the same period last year. Substantially increased sales of the company's Amicus and Patricia Z(TM) sportswear brands accounted for most of the gain. For the nine months ended April 30, 1993, revenues grew 60.4 percent to $4,629,000 from $2,890,000 one year ago.
Sales of garments incorporating Big Sky's proprietary Organik(R) fabrics totalled a record $642,000 and $1,904,000 for the three and nine months ended April 30, 1993 -- up 816 percent and 161 percent respectively over comparable 1992 levels.
"The strong performance of our branded lines during the Spring 1993 season reflects the growing number of retail outlets carrying our goods," stated Finn Walstad, president and chief executive officer. "More importantly, Big Sky has generated a record number of orders for the important upcoming fall season due to the excellent response we have received from many of our customers, including Nordstrom."
Improvements in cost controls and productivity along with a more favorable product mix reduced the company's third-quarter loss to $269,000, or 3 cents per share, down from $642,000, or 7 cents per share, in the same quarter of fiscal 1992. Nine-month losses dropped to $802,000, or 8 cents per share, from $1,305,000, or 15 cents per share, last year.
"Total selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses decreased 7 percent in the quarter despite increased selling costs associated with our branded lines," noted Walstad. "As a percentage of sales SG&A expenses dropped to 23.4 percent from 50.3 percent in the third quarter last year. We fully expect to see additional improvements in the future as more recent cost-cutting programs take effect."
Big Sky USA Inc. designs, manufactures and distributes casual clothing made from Organik, its exclusive shrinkfree and wrinkle- resistant 100-percent cotton fabrics. Big Sky's founder, Finn Walstad, invented the proprietary manufacturing process which produces the only all natural 100-percent combed cotton heavyweight fleece in the world that is completely shrinkproof and virtually wrinkle-free. The process also increases the wearability and durability of the fabric. Organik is manufactured without toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, copper and chromium salts or thermosetting resins.
In addition to producing clothing under its own labels, Big Sky manufactures private label Organik sportswear for several of the nation's premier catalog merchants and provides contract manufacturing services in its 70,000-square-foot factory to high-end sportswear companies who require quality construction using specialty materials.
