BIG BEAR TO ACQUIRE FIVE STORES IN OHIO
JOHNSTOWN, Pa., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Big Bear Stores Company, a subsidiary of The Penn Traffic Company (AMEX: PNF) announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire five Pantry Pride stores located in St. Mary's, New Bremen, Wapakoneta and Celina, all in Ohio.
"The closing of the Pantry Pride acquisition is scheduled for mid-October. The acquisition of Pantry Pride is expected to add approximately $35 million in annual sales volume to Big Bear," commented Big Bear President John E. Josephson.
"Pantry Pride is an excellent grocery operator. Their stores are attractive and extremely well run," he added.
"Because the corporate philosophies of both companies are so similar, we believe that the conversion of the Pantry Pride stores into Big Bear supermarkets will be a very natural transition. We look forward to having all Pantry Pride store employees joining us as Big Bear associates," Josephson concluded.
The Penn Traffic Company is one of the leading food retailers in the Eastern United States, operating 189 supermarkets in upstate New York, western Pennsylvania, central Ohio and northern West Virginia, under the names of P&C Foods, Quality Markets, Riverside Markets, Bi-Lo Foods, Big Bear and Big Bear Plus. Additionally, the company operates wholesale food distribution businesses serving 125 licensed franchises and 136 independent operators and a discount general merchandise business with 19 stores. Grand Union, in which Penn Traffic holds an indirect 18 percent equity interest, operates 304 supermarkets and foods stores under the Grand Union and Big Star trade names in eight Eastern states.
Penn Traffic trades on the American Stock Exchange under the symbol PNF.
