BIG BANK WATCH.

DEAR SHAREHOLDER...

* BANCO DE CREDITO

An upswing in the economy, led by the fishing and manufacturing sectors, pushed Peru's largest bank through a strong second quarter. Income from fees from banking services were also up. But Peru's political upheaval promises to erode the fiscal scenario over the short term.

* BANCO SANTIAGO

Foreign investments in Argentina and Brazil made a comeback in the second quarter. And the bank's Internet arm saw faster-than-expected growth, with 67,000 Chileans banking online by the end of the quarter. The bank's goal for the entire year 2000 had been 60,000 e-clients.

* BANCOMER

It was a cranky quarter, but better days may be ahead thanks to the merger of Grupo Financiero Bancomer with Grupo Financiero BBV-Probursa. The newly named BBVA-Bancomer is injecting capital into operations, at the same time Mexico's banking giant embraces the tech world via a new financial portal (with wireless access).
