The man raising funds to bring a historic ship back to Glasgow tried to sell it to Liverpool in 2012, it has emerged.

Ranjan Chowdhury saved the turbine steamer Queen Mary from the scrapyard in 2011 and hopes to raise PS10million to return her to her old home port.

But we can reveal he had talks in 2012 over selling the ship to a Liverpool firm who would have used her to run cruises to Wales.

Ian Sim of the Friends of TS Queen Mary, who want to buy the steamer and berth her on the Clyde, said: "This is a major surprise, particularly now Mr Chowdhury is trying to raise funds in Scotland."

A spokesman for the Queen Mary said: "We continue with our plans to return her to Glasgow."
