BIC TO SPONSOR NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
MILFORD, Conn., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- BIC Corporation is sponsoring a national essay contest for high school juniors and seniors. The contest is part of an educational kit called "Getting on the Right Wavelength" created for BIC by Lifetime Learning Systems, Inc. The kit, which is being distributed nationally to approximately 12,000 high school English teachers, is designed to show students that writing can be a fun and creative way to express themselves.
To enter BIC's contest, students must complete an essay in up to 200 words that begins "If I could change one thing...." The grand prize winner will receive a Compaq LTE/286 Laptop computer complete with WordPerfect(R) word processing software (approximate total retail value: $3,000). Four regional prize winners will each receive $500 cash awards (U.S. regions; Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific). And three runner ups will each receive $100 cash awards. The teachers of all winners and runner ups will each receive a man's or lady's Seiko watch.
All entries will be judged by Lifetime Learning Systems, Inc., an independent judging organization. The contest deadline is March 31, 1992 and winners will be announced by June 1, 1992.
Since 1985, BIC Corporation has sponsored various national essay contests in conjunction with its writing programs. "Students told us that BIC Wavelengths(TM), with their vibrant ink colors and designs, made them want to write," said Matt Sawyer, Writing Instruments product manager, "so we developed an educational program that lets them express themselves in writing."
"Our hope is that participants in BIC's 'Getting on the Right Wavelength' program will learn that writing is a fun and creative activity, as easy as daily conversation. Through a series of teacher- directed exercises, students will learn how to identify their audience and also be themselves when they put pen to paper," added Sawyer.
BIC Corporation is the leading U.S. manufacturer of writing instruments, which include ballpoint pens, mechanical pencils, and markets. BIC Wavelengths(TM), introduced in 1991, is a line of fun and fashionable pens and pencils imprinted with a variety of colorful designs and images.
