BIC PROVIDES FREE WRITING PROGRAM TO 40,000 SCHOOLS

MILFORD, Conn., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Good communication skills, both written and oral, are a necessity in today's fast-paced, high-tech world. Yet, according to a recent survey by the National Alliance of Business, high school graduates entering the job market lack essential job skills such as writing.
To help teachers supplement their lesson plans in a time of ever increasing education budget cuts, BIC Corporation (NYSE: BIC) is distributing its "Quality Comes In Writing" program to 40,000 schools nationwide.
This free educational program, created for BIC by Lifetime Learning Systems, Inc., is designed to help students in grades four through six develop strong writing skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Through four stimulating activities, students can practice writing skills as they decode and create rebus stories, plan and write their own stories, study and write ballads and keep a hypothetical journal for a famous person.
"BIC's Quality Comes In Writing' program is an excellent supplement to my lesson plans," said Mary Thibodeau, a fifth grade teacher at E.C. Stevens School in Wallingford, Conn. "The worksheets contain fun, useful ideas that encourage students to write well. These days, with education budget cuts on the rise, high quality classroom teaching aids like these are very much appreciated."
Commenting on the program, Sharon DuPuy, BIC's group product manager for stationery products, noted: "As the leading U.S. manufacturer of writing instruments, BIC has a responsibility to help educate the nation's young writers. It is a fact that the U.S. is the wealthiest industrialized nation. Yet, according to a September 1992 report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the U.S. ranks behind 12 other industrialized nations in its public spending on education."
