BG&E SIGNS CONTRACT TO PURCHASE POWER FROM PROPOSED AES PLANT
BALTIMORE, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (NYSE: BGE) announced today that it has signed a contract with the AES Corporation to purchase power from a proposed power plant which is expected to go into operation around 1997.
The contract, which needs approval by the Maryland Public Service Commission, calls for AES to develop, construct and operate a coal-fired electric generating plant and sell the power output to BG&E. The plant, which will burn Western Maryland coal, will produce 300 megawatts of electricity. While its target commercial operation date is 1997, the contract does contain flexibility to modify schedules to suit BG&E's future plans.
Although a site has not yet been selected, AES officials said the plant will be interconnected to the northern portion of BG&E's service territory, which will help balance electricity flows on BG&E's transmission system.
The AES Corporation is an independent electric power producer headquartered in Arlington, Va. It has five plants in operation and two under construction.
