BG&E INSTALLS PERIOD GAS LAMPS AT CAMDEN STATION
Two period gas lamps, exactly like those that flanked the main

entrance of Camden Station in 1867, have been installed in front of the historic train station by the Baltimore Gas & Electric Company (NYSE: BGE).
Beginning this spring, these lights will help light the way for millions of baseball fans that will flock to see the Baltimore Orioles play at the new Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The lamps will be relighted as part of a brief ceremony rededicating Camden Station, hosted by the Maryland Stadium Authority and featuring Gov. William Donald Schaefer and Mayor Kurt Schmoke, on Monday, March 9, at 9:30 a.m. BG&E is planning to use a lamplighter dressed in period garb in the ceremony.
The lamps themselves are original Welsbach, three-mantled Victorian Boulevard-style lamps with original 8-foot Baltimore fluted poles. Lamps like this were common in Baltimore from 1867 to 1957. These lamps were actually in use before being taken down and archived by BG&E. An 1867 photograph of Camden Station provided historical reference for the location of the lamps.
In addition to the lights, a plaque is being placed in front of Camden Station near the lamps proclaiming "Baltimore Gas & Electric -- The Nation's First Gas Utility." BG&E celebrates its 176th anniversary this spring.
