BG&E EMPLOYEES PITCH IN TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS IN FLORIDA
BALTIMORE, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Just because Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (NYSE: BGE) wasn't asked to help restore power to south Florida didn't mean that it wouldn't help in some other way.
BG&E and its employees, in conjunction with several local groups, have made plans to provide food, clothing and financial help to the people of south Florida who were devastated by Hurricane Andrew last week.
BG&E, in cooperation with the American Trucking Association, is providing a tractor trailer to pick up supplies at the Charles County Armory in La Planta, Md., and deliver them to south Florida. County residents donated non-perishable food, baby supplies, linen, paper products and medical supplies at County Fire Department & Rescue Squad locations. The donation of the supplies was coordinated by the Charles County Government Emergency Management Agency.
Volunteers will begin loading the truck today (Sept. 4) and will leave for Florida on Tuesday morning, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. Two BG&E employees have volunteered to deliver the supplies and expect to arrive in Florida by Friday, Sept. 11.
Employees at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant are working with the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad & Fire Department coordinating several local drives in Calvert County. "Operation Helping Hand" has collected food, toiletries, diapers, baby food, funds and several generators with help from the Solomons Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and the Lusby American Legion. BG&E donated funds to rent a truck that will be part of a convoy delivering the supplies to south Florida. The convoy, including two BG&E employees, will leave the Solomons Volunteer Fire Department at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.
BG&E is a member of the Edison Electric Institute's Mutual Assistance Group, a program designed to assist member utilities in need of help. The company sent help to South Carolina and New England after hurricanes Hugo and Bob, respectively. While a request for repair assistance has not yet occurred, probably due to the distance, the company has pre-mobilized repair crews and equipment.
