BFI BOARD ELECTS A NEW DIRECTOR

 HOUSTON, Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- The board of directors of Browning- Ferris Industries, Inc. (NYSE: BFI) today announced the election of Marina v.N. Whitman, Ph.D., as a director. Dr. Whitman is Distinguished Visiting Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. Previously, she spent 13 years at General Motors Corporation, six as vice president and chief economist, and seven as vice president and group executive, public affairs and marketing staffs. She was also a Distinguished Public Service Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh.
 Dr. Whitman has held numerous government appointments, including membership on the President's Council of Economic Advisors and the President's Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations, academic consultant to the Federal Reserve Board and membership on the advisory council of the Office of Technology Assessment. She has honorary doctoral degrees from over 20 colleges and universities, is on the board of directors of the Institute for International Economics, Proctor & Gamble Company and Chemical Banking Corporation, and is a member of Princeton University's Advisory Council to the Center for Economic Policy Studies and the Overseer's Committee to visit the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, among others. Dr. Whitman has also published a number of books and articles dealing with primarily international and domestic economic issues.
