BEYOND ENDORSES VIM USE FOR CUSTOMER APPLICATIONS
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Beyond Incorporated,

a leading enterprise-wide E-mail vendor and workgroup applications vendor, today announced support for the VIM (Vendor Independent Messaging) interface introduced by Apple, Novell, Borland and Lotus. The VIM interface specification, announced yesterday, is a non-proprietary programming interface standard to help software developers and corporate developers write messaging- and mail-enabled applications.
"The VIM specification and new steering commitment is an important new step for the electronic messaging industry and its customers," said Charles Digate, president and CEO of Beyond. "Corporate developers will now be able to write messaging applications to just one interface, or API, knowing that it will be supported ultimately by multiple back-end messaging engines."
Beyond's support for the VIM specification is in contrast to the company's concerns about the Open Messaging Interace (OMI), a previously announced messaging interface specification. "We are pleased with the VIM specification," Digate continued. "VIM has a much broader level of industry support and appears to be more technically sophisticated. We encourage other leading vendors including Soft-Switch, Banyan, Digital Equipment and Microsoft to join the effort in order to deliver a truly standard interface for customers' mail-enabled applications." VIM has been proposed as a replacement for the OMI specification.
Beyond also reiterated its policy of directly writing its messaging application products, including BeyondMail, its rule-based enterprise mail system, to the most popular open messaging engines in the market. Beyond will continue to provide native support for MHS, VINES Mail and Apple's OCE engines, and others, to provide its customers with the highest levels of robust functionality. It is not expected that full native functionality of all the major mail engines will be available as a part of the VIM interface.
"Customers' applications written to the major messaging engines through VIM will be fully interoperable and compatible with Beyond's products," said Eugene Lee, Beyond's director of product planning. "The VIM interface and Beyond's development directions will combine to offer reduced costs associated with in-house development of mail-enabled applications and the availability of robust products from Beyond. The net benefit for customers will be that their applications and Beyond's will be available on the same messaging platforms."
Beyond also announced that it is evaluating Microsoft's forthcoming Windows-based mail API, or MAPI. It is expected that Windows-oriented customers will choose to support MAPI for their Windows-based mail enabled applications, while customers who plan to retain a mixed desktop environment of DOS, Macintosh, Windows and OS/2 may choose to support VIM. Customers may also choose to support both API's. As the MAPI interface is finalized, Beyond will evaluate it as a native interface for support of its underlying messaging engines.
Beyond Incorporated, based in Cambridge, Mass. is the leading developer of enterprise-wide E-mail software that delivers advanced workgroup application functionality. Privately held Beyond has regional offices in Sacramento, Minneapolis and Dallas, as well as a network of international distributors.
