BEVERAGE DIGEST'S 1992 TOP-10 RANKINGS: PRIMARY CORPORATE GAIN FROM DR PEPPER/7UP

 OLD GREENWICH, Conn., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Beverage Digest today released the following:
 1992 review of all soft drink channels indicates among top-10 corporations:
 1) Corporate Dr Pepper/7Up's (DPSU) +0.6 share growth 100 percent larger than nine other top-10 units combined.
 2) Corporate Coke lead over corporate Pepsi increases from 8.2 share points in 1991 to 8.6 in 1992.
 3) As corporate RC decline continues, A&W Brands moves up from No. 6 rank to No. 5.
 4) Beyond DPSU growth Cadbury Beverages/Barq's gain.
 5) In 1992, top-10 corporations do 95.2 percent total soft drink industry all-channel volume, up from 95 percent in 1991, 94.5 percent in 1990, 88.4 percent in 1985 (first year BD tracking).
 Brands:
 1) Dr Pepper flagship up +0.4, largest top-10 gainer.
 2) Coke Classic increases lead over brand Pepsi from 1.6 share points in 1991 to 2.0 in 1992.
 3) Mountain Dew, up +0.2, now alone as No. 6 best selling brand. Mountain Dew previously tied for No. 6 with Sprite in 1991/1990 rankings.
 4) 7Up shows first share gains since Beverage Digest's initial brand ranking coverage in 1984.
 5) Top-10 brands account for 73.9 share, down -- albeit slightly -- for first time since Beverage Digest tracks brand shares. 1992's 73.9 top-10 brand share contrasts with 74.0 in 1991, 73.5 in 1990, 68.8 in 1984.
 Overall:
 Updating Beverage Digest's 1991 report, 1992 all-channel market volume growth slows to +1.6 percent following +1.8 in 1991, +2.8 in 1990. Soft drink industry 1992 valued at $47.4 billion retail, up +0.9 percent; $30.5 billion wholesale, up +2.3 percent. Single market share point worth $474 million at retail. Bottle/can share at 78.1 percent down -0.6; fountain at 21.0, up +0.6. Bottle/can volume up +0.9, fountain volume up +4.3 percent. Sugared soft drinks hold 73.0 share, up +0.4 vs. diets at 27.0. Volume growth: regular up +2.3, diets flat.
