BETZ MARKS 30 YEARS OF DRUMLESS DELIVERY SERVICES, SURPASSES DRUM ELIMINATION MILESTONE; 10 MILLION DRUMS ELIMINATED WORLDWIDE

TREVOSE, Pa., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- William R. Cook, president and chief operating officer of Betz Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: BTL), today announced that the company has surpassed a major environmental milestone: since introducing the industry's first drumless distribution system 30 years ago, Betz has eliminated the need to dispose of more than 10 million chemical drums worldwide.
"It is especially gratifying to mark this significant achievement on the 30th anniversary of bringing the drumless distribution concept to our marketplace," noted Cook. "Many industries, institutions and commercial establishments see drums as a growing problem and a serious threat to their environmental goals."
Chemical drums present a number of environmental, health and safety concerns including: disposal of the drums and their allowed chemical residuals in landfills, potential drum-handling hazards to employees, and assurance that the drum disposal method -- which can run as high as $100 per drum -- meets all regulations.
Recognizing these problems, Betz revolutionized the water and process and treatment industry in 1963 when it introduced an innovative solution to the problems of buying, using and dispensing powdered chemicals in drums. The company's drumless distribution service was the first to deliver treatment chemicals in liquid form for boiler, cooling and processing applications. Today, Betz Drumless Delivery Services consist of a wide variety of customized automatic inventory replenishment programs that eliminate more than 2,200 chemical drums a day.
"Drumless distribution is more important than ever," continued Cook. "For many of our customers, drums are no longer a practical, cost- effective or environmentally safe option for chemical storage, shipping and handling. They burden our landfills, increase costs and liabilities, and jeopardize environmental compliance. Betz Drumless Delivery Services are another example of our strong tradition of providing innovative solutions to customers' complex environmental challenges while reducing their operating expenses."
Dr. H. Lieberman, senior vice president of operations, also emphasized the significant health and safety benefits of eliminating drums in the workplace. "Drum reduction lessens the potential risk of customer employee injuries due to handling heavy, sharp-edged drums, and also reduces the possibility of spills, leakage, and escaping fumes."
Lieberman noted that one of the most important features of the company's drumless delivery programs is Betz-employed distribution specialists, all extensively trained to make deliveries without splashes, spills or wasted chemicals. "Driving specially designed Betz- owned vehicles, these professionals perform thorough inspections and dispense products into on-site storage tanks provided by Betz. Alternatively, they can offload and hook up returnable containers, picking up empties for return to Betz. These storage tanks and returnable containers are specially designed to resist impact and puncture and are rust-resistant."
Betz Drumless Delivery Services are included with the company's ISO 9000 scope of registration -- an independent confirmation of quality not afforded many distribution programs. With Betz' private fleet of trucks and drivers, the company has a documented delivery record of 99.7 percent right product at the right place at the right time. "We're extremely proud to offer our customers the most comprehensive, economical, and environmentally safe chemical distribution programs in the industry," concluded Lieberman. "These delivery services, along with our chemical feed and control equipment, extend Betz' control of quality through to the point of treatment application, and customer employees never handle the chemicals."
Betz Laboratories, Inc., headquartered in Trevose, produces and markets a wide range of water and process treatment programs in 56 countries worldwide. The company's services are utilized in a variety of industrial and commercial applications, with particular emphasis on the chemical, petroleum refining, paper, power, automotive, coil and steel industries.
