BETWEEN THESHEETS; Inside our hotel of the week.
THE FLEECE, WITNEY, OXFORDSHIRE
Where and why Right on the green in this lovely village, The Fleece is a charming B&B, part of The Peach Pub Company, a small group of independent gastropubs around Oxford. It has only 10 rooms - ask for one at the front overlooking the village green. There's also a private dining room - so if you can round up enough friends or family you could book the whole place and have a big party.
U On the menu The Fleece specialises in local food, cooked well. Start with a mixed deli board - delicious cheeses, ham hock terrine, cold cuts, mackerel pate, yummy dips and nibbles with rustic bread. Move on to braised venison shank with roast garlic mash or herb-baked sea bass fillets with roast new potatoes. Or try the seasonal specials or enormous Sunday roasts. If you have room for still more, there are delicious desserts, cheeses and coffees.
All the pubs in the chain pride themselves on outstanding service, and they get the right balance by being friendly and attentive without being annoying.
Enjoy the full Monty for breakfast, complete with real fresh orange juice - a vote-winner in my book.
U While you're there Witney is just half an hour west of Oxford and bills itself as the gateway to the Cots wolds. In town is the Cogges Manor Farm Museum and just up the road near the gorgeous village of Burford is the Cotswold Wildlife Park.
Spend a few days pootling about in the pretty little Cotswold villages, going from cream tea to cream tea, exploring the antique stores, boutiques and more sweet shops than you can shake a stick of rock at.
U Wake-up call Doubles from pounds 90 a night. Two nights' B&B at weekends for pounds 180 for a family room. Go to www.fleecewitney.co.uk or call 01993 892270.
