BETWEEN THE SHEETS; Inside our hotel of the week.

Byline: GILL WILLIAMS

TITCHWELL MANOR,

BRANCASTER, NORFOLK

WHERE AND WHY: There are so many birdies on this stretch of the Norfolk co astit could be called Twitch well.

This small hotel is across the road from the RSPB's most visited bird sanctuary. And there are as many great bellied foodies as spotted redshanks, thanks to a string of awards including two A Rosettes for food. The hotelis stylish but not self consciously so Expect roaring log fires on chilly days (we stayed during last week's snowstorms) and snooze in the gardens when it 's sunny. Play Lady Chatterley in the Potting Shed, a romantic hide away with a slipper bath.

ON THE MENU: The kitchen team is led by Eric Snaith, the son of the owners who has lived here since he was eight. He and restaurant manager Mark Dobby go for local produce and original, tasty combinations that don't sound like some thing dreamed up in a chemistry lab. We started dinner with delicious parsnip soup with wild garlic gathered from hedgerows. Sea food dishes use mussels, oysters and lobsters from Brancaster Stai the and crab from Cromer. We liked Flavours of the Marsh: razor clams (the beach is littered with their shells), cockles and shrimp with wild local veg seapurslane. Mackerel also went down a treat and purples proutingbroc in shallotbutter was so good I could have snaffled a whole pot.

The wine list is affordable from about pounds 15 a bottle.

WHILE YOU'RE THERE

Take a boat ride to see seals from Blakeney Point(www.sealtrips.co.uk) and see them up close at Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary(www.sealsanctuary.co.uk).
