King makes right move ALAN KING was keen to take 3lb off Trenchant, who was the highest-rated horse in the competitive Pertemps Hurdle over 2m5f at Kempton yesterday, and it proved an inspired decision as useful claimer Charlie Huxley brought the four-year-old with a sustained challenge in the home straight to sink his rivals.

It was a tremendous weight-carrying performance from Trenchant, who, having come off the bridle down the back straight, was matched at a high of 300 (for pounds 1) while pounds 23 was traded on him at 100.

It was notable that only four or five of the 13 runners really got into the contest and with this being a Pertemps Final qualifier, with most of the line-up making their seasonal debuts, it's worth drawing a line through the runs of those who finished down the field.

Duc looks useful chaser DUC DE REGNIERE failed to live up to expectations over fences two seasons ago before proving that he possesses a big engine by winning in Grade 2 company over hurdles last season, but after gaining a confidence-boosting win in yesterday's four-runner graduation chase at Kempton, he may develop into a useful chaser this season.

He was a bit careful at his fences, but it was a more polished round of jumping than on each of his three starts as a novice, although it was a shame to lose Pasco (traded at a low of 1.5 in the win market) at the second-last, as he looked capable of extending Duc De Regniere but failed to get his landing gear down in time.
