BETHLEHEM STEEL SPARROWS POINT DIVISION ISSUES ANNOUNCEMENT

SPARROWS POINT, Md., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In a production breakthrough, Bethlehem Steel's (NYSE: BS) continuous slab caster at Sparrows Point reached a tonnage level in January that demonstrates the division will ultimately have the capability to ship 3 million tons per year of 100 percent continuously cast products, said Duane R. Dunham, division president.
"The caster produced a monthly record of 305,284 tons of slabs in January, just two months after the previous record of 291,115 tons in November 1992," Dunham said.
About one year ago, Bethlehem's Sparrows Point Division announced that, within two years, it planned to attain a shipment level of 3 million tons per year of 100 percent continuously cast products. "This increased caster output shows us that we can get to where we must be to continue as a strong, full-range supplier within our marketplace," Dunham commented.
Continuously cast steel being used by the modernized hot strip mill and the newly installed coating line is allowing the Sparrows Point Division to enter markets for lighter gauge steel sheet.
The high level of production in the last two months of 1992 contributed to a record production year for the casting facility of 3,170,000 tons of slabs. The facility has been producing at a high level in order to build a higher-than-normal inventory to prepare for a planned maintenance outage of "L" blast furnace in March.
The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) shop was modernized in 1984 at a cost of more than $60 million to prepare for the installation of the division's first casting machinery. The $250 million casting facility came on stream a year later, in December 1985, with a design capacity of 2.9 million tons annually, or 242,000 tons per month.
The two vessels in the BOF shop are each rated at 295 liquid tons per heat.
