BETHLEHEM STEEL ESTABLISHES SERVICES DIVISION

BETHLEHEM, Pa., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its ongoing and extensive restructuring initiatives, Bethlehem Steel Corporation (NYSE: BS) said today it is establishing a new Business Unit called the Services Division.
In announcing the formation of the new Business Unit, Curtis H. Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman and chief executive officer, said: "The mission of the new Division is to provide quality services in an effective, cost-efficient and timely manner to Bethlehem's Business Unit operations and corporate functions."
Barnette identified four key reasons for creating the new Division:
-- Help with the transition of Bethlehem's steel plants to newly established separate Business Units with their own marketing, customer service and operating responsibilities,
-- Facilitate a clearer definition of Business Unit and Corporate functions and responsibilities,
-- Provide single-officer accountability for the delivery of services to the Business Units and Corporate functions, and
-- Cause focused analysis for the re-engineering of such services.
Barnette said the following Bethlehem Steel departments and functions are assigned initially to the new Division: Homer Research Laboratories, Quality Assurance, Information Technology, Facilities Engineering, Claims, Billing and Accounts Receivable. Approximately 30O employees will be in the new Division.
As Bethlehem continues with its quality and re-engineering efforts, Barnette said, additional activities will be transferred, as appropriate, to this Division.
Barnette also announced that Dr. Walter N. Bargeron is appointed president of the Services Division and, in addition, will be Bethlehem's chief technology and quality assurance officer. He will report to Roger P. Penny, president and chief operating officer. Bargeron is advancing from the position of vice president, technology and quality assurance, where, since 1991, he has been responsible for research, quality assurance, information technology and process technology.
Born in Westfield, Mass., Bargeron holds a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Michigan.
He joined Bethlehem Steel in 1969 and has held a number of supervisory positions in steelmaking, metallurgy and research and technology at the corporation's Lackawanna, N.Y., and Burns Harbor, Ind., steel production facilities. Prior to his transfer to the home office in 1991, he was senior manager at Burns Harbor with responsibilities relating to product quality, process technology and cold-rolled and coated sheet operations.
